FAO Priorities in Nigeria The Country Programme Framework 2023 - 2027 for Nigeria describes FAO’s medium term assistance priorities and results, derived from nationally defined priorities and objectives, to be achieved over the five-year period of the country’s programming cycle.

FAO continues to provide strategic support to national development programmes and strategies aimed at reducing poverty, improving food security and management of natural resources. From 1976 to 2012 FAO has supported and implemented 111 projects in Nigeria with a total value of approximately US$70 million.

Nigeria is the largest fish consumer in Africa and among the largest fish consumers in the world with about 3.2 million metric tons of fish consumed annually. Its fisheries and aquaculture are among the fastest growing subsectors in the country.

Nigeria achieved the first Millennium Development Goal (1c) of halving the proportion of hungry people by 2015, despite population growth.
