The FCC agreed and in 1996 created the Family Radio Service (FRS) as one of the Citizens Band Radio Services. It is used by family, friends and associates to communicate within a neighborhood and while on group outings and has a communications range of less than one mile.

Motorola T5320 FRS handheld radio. The Family Radio Service (FRS) is an improved walkie-talkie radio system authorized in the United States since 1996. This personal radio service uses channelized frequencies around 462 and 467 MHz in the ultra high frequency (UHF) band.

To avoid confusion, check your radio against a known Motorola standard radio and record your radio's channel and tone numbers in the chart below. The 22-channels assigned to the FRS and GMRS radio services are all shared, meaning that FRS operators can talk to GMRS operators, and vice versa, on all 22-channels.

2024年2月14日 · Numerous intercom systems, including doorbell intercom systems, use the FRS frequencies, often with DCS (DPL) and CTCSS (PL) codes and tones to make different "groups" in combination with frequencies/channels.

CTCSS codes are sub-audible tones that are measured by audio frequency in hertz. DCS codes are bit streams added to a radio carrier. Consumer radios often have just an ID code number to identify each specific code. The Codes listed are Midland. Both Midland and Motorola ID codes for CTCSS codes up to 38 are the same. The DCS codes are different.

The FRS is allotted 22 channels, each having a channel bandwidth of 12.5 kHz. All of the FRS channels are also allotted to the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) on a shared basis. The FRS channel center frequencies are set forth in the following table:

If your transceiver was sold exclusively as an “FRS” or “FRS/GMRS” device, AND if its antenna is NOT detachable, AND if it transmits at 0.5 watts or less on the “Shared” channels (see the manual), then it is operating in the Family Radio Service and may be used without a GMRS license on the “Shared” channels.
