Farquhar is a surname of Scottish origin, derived from the Scottish Gaelic fearchar, from fear ("man") and car ("beloved"). [1] Farquharson is a further derivation of the name, meaning "son of Farquhar".

Major-General William Farquhar (26 February 1774 – 11 May 1839) was a Madras Army officer and colonial administrator who served as the resident of Malacca from 1803 to 1818 and the resident of Singapore from 1819 to 1823.

George Farquhar (born 1678, Londonderry, County Derry, Ire.—died April 29, 1707, London, Eng.) was an Irish playwright of real comic power who wrote for the English stage at the beginning of the 18th century. He stood out from his contemporaries for originality of dialogue and a stage sense that doubtless stemmed from his experience as an actor.

Farquhar and Raffles were employees of the powerful East India Company (EIC), formed at the turn of the 17th century ostensibly to trade with India and Southeast Asia, but which eventually became a powerful agent of British imperialism. Farquhar first arrived in Malacca as an officer of the EIC in 1795 when the British occupied the Dutch port.
