USS Nicholas (FFG-47), an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for Major Samuel Nicholas, the first commanding officer of the United States Marines.

08 May 2012: the Pacific Ocean - The guided-missile frigate USS Nicholas (FFG 47) prepares for a passing exercise with USS Underwood (FFG 36) in the Pacific Ocean. Underwood is deployed to Central and South America and the Caribbean in support of Southern Seas 2012.

Over time the ships grew is size, but not in speed or crew. Technology improved in all areas of propulsion, armament and facilities. Interestingly, range did not grow as one might expect. Crew comfort certainly improved with the FFG configuration with all areas being air conditioned.

When hostilities with Iraq broke out on 17 January 1991, Nicholas was serving in the extreme Northern Persian Gulf as an advance Combat Search and Rescue platform, more than 70 miles forward of the nearest allied warship.
