A few points to keep in mind: the possibility of a fire inside the duct, more probable activation of the sprinkler due to the height, and the protection of the structure in relation to escape time for the occupants.

Sprinklers placed near air supply registers must have a higher temperature rating than typical sprinklers. This will keep the sprinkler from being accidentally set off by a blast of heat from a heater duct. Regular sprinklers set off at temperatures between 135 and 175 degrees Fahrenheit.
