In 1924, Fort Marion was designated as a National Monument. In 1933 it was transferred to the National Park Service from the War Department. In 1942, in honor of its Spanish heritage, Congress authorized renaming the fort as Castillo de San Marcos.

At the end of the Revolutionary War, Florida was returned to Spain in 1784 until Florida became a United States Territory in 1821. The Americans called the Castillo, Fort Marion, honoring the revolutionary patriot from the Carolinas, General Francis Marion.

Located on the shores of Matanzas Bay in St. Augustine, Florida, the fort is the oldest masonry citadel in the continental United States. Originally called the Castillo de San Marcos, it was built when Florida was part of the Spanish empire.

Fort Marion is in all respects a castle built after the plan of those of the middle ages, and is today one of the best preserved specimens of the military architecture of its time. It was withstood many sieges and proven itself capable on all occasions of resisting the enemy.
