Cellecyklus kan inddeles i 5 faser: G1, S, G2, M og G0 fase. Man kalder G1, M og G2 fasen samlet set for interfase. Kaldes også for first gap, hvor cellen gør klar til S-fase og cellen vokser. I G1-fasen foregår syntese af RNA og protein.

Beginning with a historical summary of studies of the cell cycle and the existence of a quiescent state, we focus on the identification of stem cell populations that reside in the G0 phase of the cell cycle, the molecular signatures of this state and the regulatory mechanisms that maintain cells in the quiescence state.
