The SD38-2 is the six axle version of a GP38-2. The SD38-2 provides additional tractive effort over its four axle counterpart while employing the same 16 cylinder roots blown 645E engine and the dash 2 control system.

Unfortunately, while the company correctly read the mid-powered market in four-axle models - selling more than 3,000 examples of the GP38 series - the industry was largely disinterested in such six-axle designs.
