The GCR Class 9Q, classified B7 by the LNER, was a class of 4-6-0 mixed traffic locomotives designed by John G. Robinson for fast goods, relief passenger and excursion services on the Great Central Railway. They were a smaller wheeled version of Robinson's earlier Class 9P "Lord Faringdon" express passenger class (LNER Class B3).

GCR Class 9P was a design of four-cylinder steam locomotive of the 4-6-0 wheel arrangement built for hauling express passenger trains on the Great Central Railway in England. A total of six were built: one in 1917, and five in 1920. They were sometimes known as the Lord Faringdon class, from the name of the first one built. [2]

Several GCR 9Q (LNER B7) 4-6-0s were at Neasden for the fast freight traffic and this one, No 461 was deployed from new in 1921 and is seen soon after on 11th May 1922. GCR built 28 9Q and LNER added 10 in 1923-1924; the former were reclassified B7/1 and the latter B7/2 to mark their smaller extreme dimensions adopted to fit the composite loading gauge of the Grouped LNER lines.

Originally introduced to Britain in 1894 for freight haulage, 4-6-0 locomotives ("Ten-Wheelers" in American railroad jargon) became the predominant type for express and mixed traffic duties. By 1948 4-6-0s in Britain were outnumbered only by 0-6-0s and 0-6-0Ts, and British Railways built more 4-6-0s than any other type.
