In molecular biology, a GC box, also known as a GSG box, [1] is a distinct pattern of nucleotides found in the promoter region of some eukaryotic genes. The GC box is upstream of the TATA box, and approximately 110 bases upstream from the transcription initiation site.

GC boxes are often found within 100 bases upstream of the transcriptional start site, and although they may appear as a single instance, they are commonly repeated 20-50 times. Sometimes, GC boxes appear in genes that do not use a TATA box.
