The polar curve is based on an average tube life output through life from two 40W Osram Daylight fluorescent tubes (2850 lumens average). 1. The lantern is designed to run a pair of 2' 40w tubes with a single instant start ballast. The capacitor dates the lantern to 1970, which would be about right. Sadly the plastic bowl was lost during the final year or so of service, but luckily a replacement was sourced. The original concrete outreach bracket was also saved when the Stanton column was sleeved.

A lot of old 5M STANTON AND STAVELEY concrete posts with swan neck brackets were replaced with new metal brackets with side entry THORN BETA 5 lanterns ( new type , 35W SOX bulbs , integral gear , 2 part RTE P42 photocells ) . The old lanterns were GEC Z5591 lanterns ( 80W MBF Mercury bulbs , less gear) .

The GEC Z8260 was the final side-road fluorescent lantern designed by the GEC. It was a complete redesign of the previous GEC Z8256 with a sleek new canopy and equally slim-line bowl.

GEC Z8526 Lantern acquired in September 2006. Thanks to Steve Rowe for letting me have this lantern. Originally fitted in Topsham Road, Exeter, the lantern is believed to have been fitted with a 250 Watt SON lamp for its entire life although the actual design dates from mercury days.
