Nov 4, 2009 · The GP40-2W is a Canadian varient of the GP40-2 built by GMD in Ontario. 287 were built for CN and GO Transit, with most of CN's being GP40-2LW's with higher frames. CN has recently begun selling off many of their GP40-2LW's to shortline and regional railroads, while all of GO's have been sold off for some time.

Not all units, however, were built with said specifications, for they are classified simply as a "GP40-2" by EMD standards, but rather a "GP40-2W"; thus, essentially being a wide-cab GP40-2. Furthermore, they ride noticeably lower than their GP40-2L (GP40-2LW) brethren.

The EMD GP40 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1965 and December 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 16-cylinder engine generating 3,000 hp (2,240 kW).

All GP40-2s featured a 16-cylinder EMD 645-series diesel engine which was rated at 3,000 horsepower. Early to mid-production phase 2 GP40-2s were built from mid-1976 through late-1979. Several major spotting features of Phase 2 units include: an 88” low nose, corrugated radiator grilles and notched step wells.
