The EMD GP7 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and General Motors Diesel between October 1949 and May 1954. [2] The GP7 was the first EMD road locomotive to use a hood unit design instead of a car-body design.

Illinois Central (Gulf) 8903 was one of 14 IC GP7 units built for passenger service in 1952-53. By the time this photo was taken at North Baton Rouge Yard its stem generator and water tanks has been removed, but it still had its hood-mounted air reservoirs.

UP was impressed by the economic operation of the GP7s, and in October 1953 it ordered 190 more GP7s, with 115 of them to be built as cab units and 75 as cabless booster units.
