GSG-9 (GrenzSchutzGruppe 9) is a special forces counter-terrorism service of the German government. The group was formed on April 17th, 1973 and features approximately 250 personnel under the authority of the German Government and its Federal Police.

GSG 9 is deployed for counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and high-risk law enforcement operations, including responses to kidnapping, extortion, and serious organized crime. An increasing number of arrests by GSG 9 are conducted in the area of cybercrime, which often requires quick action to preserve evidence.

While the majority of the 20,000 FBG police officers perform assignments of undercover seizures against single perpetrators, the 200-man GSG9 force performs the special assignment of combating militant groups to protect or save human life.

Its name was derived from the fact that the BGS already had eight regular police groups.

They also are used to secure locations, neutralize various targets, track down violent fugitives and sometimes conduct sniper-involved operations. Furthermore, the GSG 9 is very active in developing and testing methods and tactics for these types of missions.

While most people know the MP5SD as the classic "assaulter’s" silent SMG, the GSG9 and SAS had been using it along with a 4x Hendsoldt Z24 optic as a "silent sniper".
