The 1400 class was motor fitted for working push-pull trains which is the only difference between this class and the 5800 class. They were employed all over the GWR system on light branch trains until they began to succumb to branch line closures and the introduction of diesel railcars with the first being withdrawn in 1956.

1401 in plain black livery with a small early crest. The loco found fame in the 1953 film 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' 4695 at Stafford Road, 11 September 1960, with a shiny safety valve bonnet. BR(W) insignia on 57xx/8750 panniers were commonly offset toward the rear of the tank, aligning above the toolbox.

This pretty class of engines were designed to replace the Wolverhampton '517' class, which by 1932 was looking well past their best. Charles Collett kept the design very much in the form of it's predecessor but with modern refinements.
