The Great Western Railway (GWR) 7200 Class is a class of 2-8-2T steam locomotive. They were the only 2-8-2Ts built and used by a British railway, [ 1 ] and the largest tank engines to run on the Great Western Railway.

7200 2-8-T GWR Collett 7200 – 7253 - Preserved British Steam …
It was converted to the prototype of the 2-8-2T 7200 class, the final development of the GWR eight-coupled freight tank locomotive. The conversion included extending the frames by 4ft 1in, adding a radial truck with 3ft 8in diameter wheels; increasing the water capacity to 2500 gallons and the coal capacity to 6 tons.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) operated a class of 54 2-8-2T engines that had been rebuilt from 2-8-0T locomotives by Charles Collett, chief mechanical engineer of the GWR. As early as 1906, the chief mechanical engineer at the time, George Churchward , planned a class of Mikado tank engines to handle heavy coal trains in South Wales .

2013年7月15日 · The 2 - 8 - 2 tank was first envisaged in Churchwards Standardisation Plan of 1906 but due to fears that the locomotives would not be able to cope with the sharp curves found in the Welsh railway system, it was not built. In response to this, the '4200' 2 - 8 - 0 tanks were constructed instead.

2011年6月21日 · All of the eccentric straps have now been white metalled, 2 are now machined and will be fitted in the near future. Work is underway on the big end bearings with a view to fitting the connecting rods later in the year. The boiler has had all of the steel stays removed, the saftey valve mounting machines, flue tube holes cleaned up and checked over.

The GWR solved the problem by converting some of the class to 2-8-2Ts to enable them to carry more fuel. The work was carried out at Swindon, starting with 5275, which returned to traffic as a 2-8-2T, numbered 7200 in August 1934.

My favourite GWR tank engines the mighty 72xx tanks built to haul heavy coal traffic in South Wales. Three examples still exist : 7200 7202 7229 All thee were rescued rom Barry scrapyard between 1974 and 1984.
