3205 was built by the GWR in 1946 and is the sole surviving member of the 120 strong 2251 class of locomotives designed by C B Collett. 3205 was first allocated to Gloucester and spend much of its early life locally, being allocated to Gloucester, Cheltenham and Worcester.

The Great Western Railway 3200 Class (or 'Earl' Class) was a design of 4-4-0 steam locomotive for passenger train work. The nickname for this class, almost universally used at the time these engines were in service, was Dukedog since the locomotives were composed of former Duke Class boilers on Bulldog Class frames.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) 2251 Class or Collett Goods Class was a class of 0-6-0 steam tender locomotives designed for medium-powered freight. They were introduced in 1930 as a replacement for the earlier Dean Goods 0-6-0s and were built up to 1948.

GWR Collett 2251 class 0-6-0 no 3205 was resident on the SVR between 1967 and 1987, and was a Gala visitor in 2000 and 2010. The Collett 2251 class was originally designed to replace the Dean goods engines in use on lightly laid lines in Central Wales, and were sometimes referred to as the ' Collett Goods'. 120 were built between 1930 and 1948.

The 2251 class were the last design of 0-6-0 tender engines to be built in Britain and had fairly large driving wheels at 5’2″, sharing a boiler with the 9400 heavy pannier tank locomotives being built in the 1940s.
