The 4709 Group will build a tenth locomotive in Churchward’s 47XX series. Designed to haul heavy overnight freight trains into London from the west and south west, the 47XX were powerful and before being withdrawn, often used on fully loaded weekend passenger excursions.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) 4700 Class was a class of nine 2-8-0 steam locomotives, designed by George Jackson Churchward. They were introduced in 1919 for heavy mixed-traffic work. Although primarily designed for fast freight, the class also sometimes hauled passenger trains, notably heavy holiday expresses in the summer months.

The Great Western Society decided to create a 4700 class locomotive and give it the number 4709. Whilst this is a new build project it is being undertaken using a mixture of new parts and others recycled from former Barry scrapyard locomotives.

No.4709 nicknamed Night Owl is a steam locomotive which is under construction as a "new-build" project, presently located at Llangollen Railway in Llangollen, Denbighshire. The 4700 Class 2-8-0 was a class of engine which failed to be preserved.

Visually 4709 looks just like another of the stripped- down chassis surrounding her in the shed. A closer inspection reveals a great deal, of course, and all around are the tell-tale nuts and bolts, the rivet guns and air hoses and the heavy lifting tackle.
