Of the locos built by outside contractors, 6700–49, 7700–24 and 8725–49 were built with riveted tanks. (A few of them, e.g. 8729, received welded tanks later.) Except for 6700–49, which had steam brakes, the 5700 class locos had vacuum brakes and steam heating. ATC was fitted to earlier members of the class within a few years.

The 5700 was the GWR standard type of pannier tank locomotive. They were designed for shunting and light goods work. They were built as replacements for earlier saddle tank and pannier tank locomotives dating back to the 1880s.

Most of the 5700, 6700, 7700 and 8700 series were withdrawn between 1957 and 1962 whereas the 9700 and 3700 series were mostly withdrawn in 1963 to 1964. The withdrawals of the 3600, 4600 and 9600 series occurred in 1964 to 1965.

2006年9月8日 · The Todotrenes article (Locobase's translation) notes that the GWR had an "insatiable" appetite for 0-6-0s, proportionally double those studs of either the LNER or the LMS. Moreover, while the LMS and LNER began to use diesel locomotives for some work, the GWR preferred to build these pannier tanks.

The class 5700 came from Collett and was based on the class 2721 locomotives, which were later rebuilt into Pannier Tanks. A total of 863 were built between 1929 and 1950, making them the most numerous class of the GWR and thus became an icon. Some adapted variants were designated the classes 6700, 8750 and 9700.
