The Great Western Railway (GWR) 9400 Class is a class of 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive, used for shunting and banking duties. The first ten 9400s were the last steam engines built by the GWR.

In the event owing to materials shortages and heavy post-war demand on the British locomotive industry, delivery was not completed until late 1956, after some builders had already subcontracted their orders to others. The last built was 3409 which was ordered by GWR in December 1947 and delivered by Yorkshire Engine Company in October 1956.

Running numbers: 9400 - 9499, 8400 - 8499, 3400 - 3409. 1955-56 (3400 - 3409 produced by Yorkshire Engine Co.) to lot number 387. The '9400' class were the tank version of the Collett '2251' tender engine. As can be seen the first ten locomotives were built at Swindon and these engines represented the last locomotives built by the Great Western.

Designed by Hawksworth and introduced in 1947 only the first 10 locomotives of this class were actually built by the GWR, the remainder entering into service from 1948-1955. The locomotives had the same boiler as the Collett 2251 class and as a consequence were heavier than the previous 57XX class.
9400 – Preserved British Steam Locomotives
9400 was one of the last batch of locomotives built at Swindon in 1947 prior to nationalisation. It was initially allocated to Swindon shed where it remained until November 1955 when it was transferred to Old Oak Common. The superheated boiler was replaced in 1955 with a non-superheting boiler.
