The GER Class T18 was a class of fifty 0-6-0 T steam locomotives designed by James Holden for the Great Eastern Railway. They passed to the London and North Eastern Railway at the grouping in 1923 and received the LNER classification J66.

By the mid-1880s these engines were clearly insufficient to handle the rapid development in freight traffic. Hence Holden's first locomotive design for the GER was the Class T18 0-6-0T shunter (LNER Class J66). The first was built in May 1886, and by 1886 a total of fifty had been built in five batches.

After the opening of the GN&GE various new marshalling sidings had to be opened to deal with the coal traffic. The T18s were to some extent a re-working of earlier GE locomotive types, but they spawned a large number of similar 0-6-0Ts for suburban and branch passenger work.

The GER operated the world’s most intensive steam operated suburban passenger service out of Liverpool Street Station and these locomotives performed very reliably on them. Both passenger and shunting locomotives could also be found at Colchester, Ipswich, Cambridge, King’s Lynn, and Peterborough East.

However, those with the longer fireboxes are specified as "T18 Class boilers, high pressure", even though they could not actually be fitted to the T18 class! The Drawing Office routinely produced small 'diagrams' of the various locomotive types for use by the Traffic, Accounting, Civil Engineer's and other departments.

The GER's fleet of Holden T18 class 0-6-0T locomotives had proven successful as both shunters and on high-intensity suburban services, so Holden looked at how best to improve them. This resulted in the R24 class (later LNER J67) of 1890, which was near-identical to the T18s but featured a lengthened wheelbase and modified tanks. 14 batches were ...

GER S56 / J69 Class No.87 - Locomotion Models
The J69 Class has its origins in the success of Holden’s T18 Class, which had proven that the engine’s shunting design was also suited to high-intensity suburban commuter traffic. Holden sought to improve these engines, which resulted in the production of the 1890 R24 Class 0-6-0T, a class almost identical to the T18 but with some key ...
