Definitions for "gyp", "gypsy": a negative act or characteristic (being stolen from, cheated, over charged, etc.) a perjorative for a specific group of (minoritized) people in Europe; Background: Originally, it was commonly assumed that "gypsies" came from Egypt. More recent research suggest they came from northern India over 1500 years ago.

It was intended as derogatory, you couldn't trust a medieval Welshman. The medieval clergyman Gerald of Wales (c. 1146 – c. 1223, of mixed Norman and Welsh descent) didn't like them very much:
