hdmi 1.4 can handle 1080p @ 120hz (144hz). I know hdmi 2.0 can handle 1440p at 120hz (144hz). Your issue may be specific to your monitor and sometimes certain settings can interfere. I've been running my hdmi 2.0 monitor on 1080/120 with my PS5.

2020年11月27日 · Long answer: Hdmi 1.4 supports 120hz in 1080p but only 60hz in 1440p due to its bandwidth limitation. AFAIK you need hdmi 2.0 or 2.1 to support anything above 120hz or even 50hz (4k) on resolution above 1440p. Hdmi 1.4 does support 1440p but only 60hz. This might be the reason for people having problem setting 120hz. I have no way to test it.
