The sea was choppy. Two watches of the Hogue were on the decks, while the third watch was asleep below. I was with the third watch.

2004年7月5日 · Four brothers of HMS Hogue, and all saved. The four men, James, Thomas, Harry and George Murfield, of Whitby were all seamen of the Naval Reserve. At the time the ship was struck they were each at their separate posts, and only came together on arrival at Harwich, whence they departed for a brief period of rest at home.

In 1914 at the start of WW1 HMS ABOUKIR was a substantial Cressy Class Cruiser of 12,000 tons, launched in 1900, having two 9.2 inch guns now and stern and a central battery of 12 six inch guns plus many quick firer’s and machine guns.

The story is well and grippingly told with a good balance of human interest and policy/technical matters. This incidence is mentioned in most general or naval histories of the war, but only in passing.
