HP-87/87XM. These models featured a wider CRT that displayed 16 rows of 80-character lines. (Graphics mode was the same with the image centered in the display.) This wider display precluded the inclusion of a tape drive or printer but HP-IB was built in which allowed the connection of up to 14 devices including disk drives, printers, plotters etc.

The 10-inch screen on the 87 could print 24 lines of text by 80 characters and had a graphics resolution of 400 x 544 dots. The 87 came standard with an HP-IB interface. It also came standard with 128K RAM, expandable to 640K. The 87XM replaced the 87 in 1983. The 87XM was obsoleted in October of 1984. Collector's Notes:

Mid-life improvements to the family included the HP-85B, the HP-87XM and the HP-86B. All offered additional built-in features and more memory. Finally, there was also an embedded version of the HP-85 that was called the 9915A/B .

They provided the capability of the HP 9800 series desktop computers with an integrated monitor in a smaller package including storage and printer, at half the price. The machines were built around an HP-proprietary CPU code-named “Capricorn” running at 625 kHz ( 0.6 MHz, sic) and had a BASIC interpreter in ROM (32 kB).

2009年12月4日 · The HP-87 was followed by the HP-86 and HP-87XM. The HP-86 lost the internal monitor in favour of an external monitor, and lost the built in HP-IB connector in favour of a Centronics parallel printer port and two connectors for HP floppy disks. The HP-86 also had 64K RAM whilst the HP-87XM included 128K RAM.

2025年3月5日 · HP87-HP87XM Autostart Battery? I have 2 HP87's and both have lost their channel 7 HP-IL. If the floppy is powered up before the computer, the 87 can acquire the floppy but not the other way around. Thought there might be a battery for autostart of the 87's but inspection of an open case does not show one.
