2010年1月8日 · The SAS Controller I used when I still used a HP SAS Expander was an IBM M1015 (which can be flashed to an LSI 9211-8i IT mode controller, most of these cards are really just LSI cards with custom BIOS). It has 2 internal SAS ports I linked to 2 of the SAS ports of the expander (they can pool interlink connections).

I just recently got the idea to build a cheap jbod and got several cards from ebay. Firmware on the LSI was 7.39.02 (IT mode) from August 2015, and firmware on the HP SAS exp is at 2.10.

2011年5月3日 · It is using like 70w of power for just the chasis, fan, board and SAS expander when another motherboard I tested (that gave power to the SAS expander but solid LED so wouldn't detect) was around 40w. That is a pretty significant difference especially when the disks are at idle with disks the entire 15 disk enclosure is using 150 watts.

2010年1月8日 · One of the HP SAS expanders is connected with a SFF-8088 (external) to SFF-8087 (internal) connectors and it works. The second card is currently connected with an external to external SFF-8088 cable and it is not being recognized. I had the same problem with the first HP SAS expander which is why I went for a external to internal cable.

2012年5月2日 · I see in MSM - that Expander or controller has label : number of fans: 0 - so it looks like there is a possibility to attach fan and take power from the board, just don't know how and where... If anyone knows pin layout of e.g. HP Expander or any IBM controller it would be good guideline to see where to hook up a fan connector !!

If you are just sticking it in a home or office built box you most likely do not have the neccessary amount of cooling for the card. You can either increase your cooling of the box itself, or you can actively cool the card.
