Maloo holds the world record for the fastest ute, an LS2 powered VY series Maloo R8, achieving a top speed of 271.44 km/h (168.66 mph). It beat the record previously held by the Dodge Ram SRT-10 by over 20 km/h. However, succeeding Maloos have surpassed this figure.

The VU Maloo featured the same LS1 5.7 litre V8 engine as in the VX ClubSport with 255 kW (342 hp). Mirroring the sedan range, the HSV VU ute was now also available as Maloo R8, which featured standard 'Performance' brakes and a hard tonneau cover with raised rear wing. Overall, 301 examples were produced of the first series VU Maloo. [18]

The introduction of the new VU Holden Ute allowed HSV to produce an all-new Maloo variant. A limited edition Senator 300 model also became available, equipped with the 300kw V8 and suspension modifications from the GTS. The VX range saw HSV offer its first Coupé models based on the new V2 series, in GTO and GTS spec.

Released in March 2001, the HSV VU Series I (VU.I) Maloo was a rear-wheel drive, performance utility. Manufactured in Elizabeth, South Australia, and finished by HSV in Clayton, Victoria, the VX ClubSport was powered by a 5.7-litre V8 petrol engine that was mated to either a six-speed T56 manual or four-speed 4L60-E automatic transmission.
