Anyone know linguistically why when you say "halb ..." it's always the following hour. E.g. halb drei is 2:30 rather than halb zwei like in English. I was taught to think of it as Germans saying "half to" the hour rather than "half past". Is that correct? Just wondering if anyone has any further insights into the history or context of the language.

When learning time in Duolingo for half past 2 it translates to halb drei. Why not halb zwei?
