II was a significant improovement in everything but still needed a tether. MK. III was basically MK. II with internal powersuply MK. IV was MK.

2021年9月4日 · I think this is pretty spot on for what the Mk. 1 would've looked like. I agree with you that the H.E.V. suit is essentially a high tech hazmat suit (it literally stands for Hazardous En-Vironments suit [good lord Black Mesa]), so it makes a lot of sense that the first version would be really similar to a regular hazmat suit, but with some small tech bits added on.

And perhaps the Mark III is from around the 1980s, improving on the design. a tl:dr summation of them would be, via my inference: The Mark 1: a unpowered proprietary hazmat suit.

If he received it to fight the Combine a ballistic vest still would sound more reasonable as you expect gunfight not radiation, electric discharge and blunt-force trauma (HEV suit protects you against according to wikia)

Mark V was made in a post apocalyptic time when getting resources was harder, so of course it'd be simpler looking, the HEV mark IV was made when Black Mesa had a much higher budget to the point where they had a bunch of these HEV suits out there, in Xen, and on Gina and Colette.

It's my head cannon that the HEV mk.4 is objectively better than the mk. 5, because: while the former was designed and built by a government-funded science and weapon manufacturing facility, the latter was designed and built probably exclusively by Dr. Isaac Kleiner with leftover HEV parts and probably some scavenged Combine tech.
