A German immigrant to California's Gold Rush, F. A. Hihn is considered by many as the County's most influential entrepreneur, from arrival in Santa Cruz (1851) to his death (1913).

Frederick Augustus Hihn, was just 19-years-old when he left his native Germany for California in 1849 at the outset of the “rush” for California’s newly discovered gold — which had been found on January 24, 1848. Born in Holzminden (Federal Republic of Germany), his family was comprised of nine children, he had six brothers and two sisters.

Frederick A. Hihn or F.A. Hihn (August 16, 1829 – August 23, 1913) served in the California legislature and was a prominent landowner. [1] Born Friedrich August Ludewig Hühn in the Duchy of Brunswick in modern-day Germany, Hihn emigrated to California during the Gold Rush in 1849.

From his arrival on September 20, 1851, at age 22, until his death on August 23, 1913, at age 84, Frederick Augustus Hihn was the most prominent pioneer of the county, the man with the greatest land holdings in the county, the one who paid the greatest amount in property taxes, and the county’s first millionaire.
