A homeobox is a DNA sequence, around 180 base pairs long, that regulates large-scale anatomical features in the early stages of embryonic development. Mutations in a homeobox may change large-scale anatomical features of the full-grown organism.

Homeobox genes are characterized by a conserved 180-bp DNA sequence coding for a 60-aminoacid DNA-binding domain called the ‘homeodomain’. They function as transcription factors recognizing specific DNA sequences and regulate target genes (McGinnis and Krumlauf, 1992; Quiring et al., 1994).
