However, the Homestuck Trolls do have more distinctive personalities despite looking the way they do already. How these both corrolate is this: Homestuck trolls are ALWAYS seen with distinctive personalities despite having gray skin (like the Trolls movie Trolls), but this does not deny my theory!

Originally they were based on various types of internet trolls. All-caps shouting assholes, leet speak, sarcasm everywhere, etc. That isn't enough for a full 12 people group, so it got branched out into various groups of internet culture. Karkat is based on script kiddies, and Sollux on more competent programmers. Tavros is a shy casual gamer.
