Totally agree. Private sellers are the best deal usually for a used car. Used car lots are a gamble. For every honest used car lot there's two sketchy ones trying to dump problem cars on someone else. If you can buy a car from the original owner, that's usually the best option imo (especially if it's an older model with low mileage for its age.)

Would you buy a used car online without seeing it in person?
Wondering what people's thoughts are regarding buying a used car outright online, without having seen it. Carvana seems to be doing well with this model, and Tesla has perfected it (for new cars mind you), but I don't actually know anyone that has bought a used car outright online, without seeing it or test driving it.

Buying a car online (especially a used car) causes a fundamental problem where you miss the physical experience of driving it - and you can learn a lot about its condition by driving it. You can work around this problem, but never solve it. It helps to trust the company, but maybe that's also a mistake.

Carvana/Carmax are a user-friendly option for newer used cars (say $10000+ or $15000+), but if you're looking for say a $3000-10,000 car private sellers might be your best bet (I stay away from used car lots but that's just me). You can find listings on Facebook, Craigslist, CarGurus, etc.

Don't buy a car unless you've seen it and driven it. If it's a used car, have an independent mechanic check it out. If you haven't done all of that, don't buy it. And if you have done all of that, then that means you've made the trip once, just make it again. Better yet, find a car closer to you.
