An HWO unit would only be used before CT on a snubbing job where: There is insufficient space above the wellhead or deck space. Rotational torque is required on the pipe that is greater than that available from downhole motors. Pressures exceed the rating of CT pipe i.e. circa 5,000 psi burst and collapse.

HWO units are often used instead of conventional drilling or work over rigs for dead well intervention operations, they are cheaper and easier to mobilize than a rig. Snubbing is performed by introducing an internally plugged pipe into a live well using BOP’s to obtain an external seal around the pipe.
