US 83 is a largely north–south highway, 893 miles (1,437 km) in length, in Texas except for a segment parallel to the Rio Grande, where it takes an east–west course, much of which runs concurrently with Interstate 2 (I-2). It enters the United States and Texas near Brownsville concurrent with US 77 and then splits from US 77 at Harlingen.

U.S. Highway 83 (US 83), dedicated as the Texas Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway, is a U.S. Highway in the U.S. state of Texas that begins at US 77 (Interstate 69E, I-69E) in Brownsville and follows the Rio Grande to Laredo, then heads north through Abilene to the Oklahoma state line north of Perryton, the seat of Ochiltree County.

U.S. Route 83 is one of the longest north–south U.S. Highways in the United States, at 1,885 miles (3,034 km). Only four other north–south routes are longer: U.S. Routes 1, 41, 59 and 87. The highway's northern terminus is north of Westhope, North Dakota, at the Canadian border, where it continues as Manitoba Highway 83.

Highway 83 ran east of there, and traveled south through Nebraska and Kansas where Highway 183 is today. As the vision of Highway 83 as a border-to-border highway grew, it was changed to the western route it runs today and the two highway numbers switched. Because of the Great Depression, and World War II, progress on completing the road was slow.
