Hyphaene is a genus of palms native to Africa, Madagascar, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. [2][3][4] The genus includes the Doum palm (H. thebaica). They are unusual among palms in having regular naturally branched trunks; most other palms are single-stemmed from the ground. In Swahili, it is called "koma".

2016年1月28日 · Hyphaene thebaica is an extremely useful multipurpose tree for arid and semi-arid regions, yielding fibre, construction material, food, fodder and a range of other products. In Eritrea it plays an important role in food security: it provides food in times of food shortage and the leaves are a source of income.

Here we propose brief descriptions for all of them, as well as data on their ecology, distribution and uses, when known. We are currently recognizing the following species within the genus Hyphaene: H. compressa, H. coriacea, H. dichotoma, H. guineensis, H. macrosperma, H. petersiana, H. reptans and H. thebaica.

Hyphaene is pleonanthic, dioecious and includes species with small to massive and tall, solitary or basally clustered, erect or creeping stems (Figs. 1a-b); costapalmate leaves (Fig. 1d), often persistent when old; and conspicuously polymorphic, brown to orange fruits (Fig. 1f).

First species-level phylogeny produced for the enigmatic palm genus Hyphaene. Several important questions on the systematic relationships within the genus, evolutionary history of the aerial branching growth, typical for some species, and ages of origin and diversification, can be now addressed in a phylogenetic context.
