Interstate 72 (I-72) is an Interstate Highway in the Midwestern United States. Its western terminus is in Hannibal, Missouri, at an intersection with U.S. Route 61 (US 61); its eastern terminus is at Country Fair Drive in Champaign, Illinois. The route runs through the major cities of Decatur, Illinois, and Springfield, Illinois.

Interstate 72 stretches across central Illinois from Hannibal, Missouri to Champaign-Urbana along a mostly rural route. Prior to 1995, the freeway comprised just an 80 mile long route east from Springfield to Decatur and Champaign. The Central Illinois Expressway (U.S. 36) extended the route west to Quincy.

I-72 serves as a significant portion of the Illinois side of the Chicago-Kansas City Expressway concept, which follows US-36 across northern Missouri. The Chicago-Kansas City Expressway was originally intended to connect Chicago, to the north–south NAFTA corridors and provide an alternate route for freight traveling on I-70 and I-80.

(WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Transportation is starting work on the Interstate 72/57 interchange ahead of a larger reconstruction project that will begin next year. IDOT officials said that starting Monday, crews will start building crossover pavement in the grass median of I-72.
