Nov 23, 2009 · i386 is for 32 bit processors. All Core 2 Duos are capable of running 64 bit operating systems and 32 bit operating systems. You want x86_64 as it will run better and allow you to have more RAM in the future, although if you are worried about compatibility, you could use i386. Personally I haven't had any problems with x86_64 on Linux.

Feb 1, 2010 · i386 is for extremely old CPU generation dating before Pentium. i686 is post Pentium generation. No one today have i386, they are at least 15 years old. That being said, i386 marks a 'compatibility' build and should work on ANY 32bit x86 CPU. i686 may or may not use MMX, SSE and more extensions.

Jul 5, 2014 · I noticed those terms x86, i386, i686, amd64, i5, i7, archtecture, processor from the web, from my own notebook, from book readings. But I am really confused by those terminologies. I try my best to elaborate my confusion, though you might understand it. The main obstacle ahead is I cannot organize my mind on the mainline behind those terms.
Why is 64 bits version called AMD64 and 32 bits version called i386?
AMD came out with the 64-bit ISA used, so it's called AMD64. Intel has their own version, EM64T, which is mostly compatible. Likewise, Intel had the 32-bit ISA first, on their i80386, or i386 for short. AMD licensed it from them long ago.

Apr 22, 2017 · Many of the suggestions here assume that if the system is capable of running 64-bit OS and programs, then the installed version of Windows is 64-bit as well. This is not necessarily the case, since it was common practice (and still is among some vendors) to install the i386 version by default since driver support was/is more mature there.
