Areas of Knowledge (AOKs) form the core of the International Baccaluerate Theory of Knowledge (IB TOK) course. In this section, we will discuss each of the 6 AOKs: Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, Ethics, Mathematics, Religious Knowledge Systems and History in detail.

It provides an opportunity for students to question the assumptions and biases that underlie knowledge claims and to recognize the value of different perspectives. The course is structured around five areas of knowledge: The IB explains each of the areas of knowledge TOK Guide, for first assessments from 2022.

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course is split into two parts. Themes, and Areas of Knowledge. For the exhibition, students focus on the themes learned during the first year of the IB Diploma Programme, while the TOK Essay focuses on the Areas of Knowledge (AOK) primarily introduced in the latter half of their TOK education.

Here’s one way of structuring your TOK essay. A ‘hook’ to grab the attention of your readers - this could be an engaging, interesting, intriguing opening, like a quote or a key idea or theory. Explain the key words and ideas of the title, and how you will interpret them . Outline the scope of your essay - ie the AOKs you will focus on.
