History of IBM magnetic disk drives - Wikipedia
The IBM 3330 Direct Access Storage Facility, code-named Merlin, was introduced in June 1970 for use with the IBM System/370 and the IBM System 360/195. The original announcement included the 3330 Model 1, with two drives, and the 3330 Model 2, with only one drive.
The IBM 3330 Direct Access Storage Facility, code-named Merlin, was introduced in June 1970 for use with the IBM System/370. Its removable disk packs held 100 MB (404 tracks/surface x 19 surfaces x 13,030 bytes/track). An upgrade in 1972 doubled capacity to 200MB by increasing tracks per inch from 384 to 808.
1973: "Winchester" pioneers key HDD technology
In 1969, IBM charged San Jose project manager Kenneth E. Haughton with developing a “direct access storage facility” that matched the performance of the high-end IBM 3330 system at a price attractive to low-end System/370 computer customers. The IBM3340 hard disk drive (HDD) that began shipping in November 1973 pioneered new low-cost, low ...
The IBM 3830 storage Control and the IBM 3330 Disk storage combine to provide a high capacity direct access storage facility for medium-to-large scale IBM computers. Attached to a block multiplexer channel, each facility provides fast access to as many as 800,000,000 bytes of online storage. standard checking and retry features increase sys

The modern solution to this problem was introduced in the IBM 3330 for use with the IBM System/370 in 1970. With the IBM 3330 the head assembly is movable to arbitrary positions by means of a current-carrying coil inside a fixed magnet (coiled a "voice coil" for use of the same effect in loudspeakers (where the magnet moves inside a coil.))
History (1971): IBM 3330-1 - StorageNewsletter
2018年7月24日 · The 3330-1 achieved 100MB via increasing both tracks per inch and the number of bits per track, and the 3330-11 version again doubled the tracks per inch to achieve 200MB. Positioning the heads was based upon information recorded on the lowest disk surface, allowing tracks to be closer together than practical with mechanical detents thereby ...
