The IBM 7040 was a historic but short-lived model of transistor computer built in the 1960s. The less-expensive IBM 7330 data tape storage unit was used in many 7040 installations.

Columbia's IBM 7040 Data Processing System (i.e. computer), installed in May 1965 and coupled with an IBM 7090, which was upgraded to an IBM 7094 in 1966. The coupled 7094/7040 system was removed in 1968 to make way for the IBM 360/91.

The IBM 700/7000 series is a series of large-scale (mainframe) computer systems that were made by IBM through the 1950s and early 1960s. The series includes several different, incompatible processor architectures. The 700s use vacuum-tube logic and were made obsolete by the introduction of the transistorized 7000s.

Probably the only thing for which the 7040 is famous is the creation of WATFOR and WATFIV by the University of Waterloo, Canada due to the extremely slow compilation speed of IBM's FORTRAN IV on the 7040.
