The IBM 709 is a computer system that was announced by IBM in January 1957 [1] and first installed during August 1958. [2][3][4] The 709 was an improved version of its predecessor, the IBM 704, and was the third of the IBM 700/7000 series of scientific computers.

In the late 1950s, IBM developed the 709 and then the 7090 — which, for the first time, featured transistors instead of vacuum tubes. Though the series was replaced by the release of IBM’s System/360 computers in 1964, the decade of innovation on the 700 machines built the foundation for IBM’s strength in the mainframe computer market.

The IBM 709 was IBM's last major vacuum tube scientific mainframe (built at a time when computers for scientific and business computing used separate instruction sets). It was announced in January, 1957. Major advances over its predecessor, the IBM 704, included indirect addressing, and channels (called 'Data Synchronizers' at the time).
