Vanaf 1977 werd door de NS het zogeheten Intercitymaterieel ingezet, kortweg ICM genoemd. Dit is het laatste treintype dat een plannaam kreeg en dat was dan ook Plan Z. Kenmerkend aan de ICM is de doorloopkop, die het mogelijk maakte om reizigers tussen de gekoppelde treinstellen te kunnen laten bewegen.
