Read these instructions and study the One Metre Rig Plan RP16D so that you are familiar with the tools/techniques required and the general layout of the rig. The dimensions will provide rigs suitable for use on most IOMs. However, be prepared to adapt dimensions for specific boats where you are given different data.

Set the rig up with a reasonable sail shape forestay tension and jib twist, the jib leech parallel to the mast or just open at the top. This is your starting point.

Building an IOM rig. The starting point for a really good rig is ensuring that you set up the mast to match the sails as far as possible. To halp you achieve this, there are some general guidelines on this page. Most boat builders supply a rigging guide with their hulls, and it is worth getting your hands on the guide for your particular boat.

Our base IOM Mast Layout below should be looked at in two sections for marking out before prebend and fittings are applied, drilled and fastened.

Make assembly of rig and boom kits easier by using the drill blocks (to aid drilling holes in the correct place and attitude) and boom fitting assembly block (to add fittings at correct attitude). See DB-BOOM, DB-MAST-110 and BFAB.

Use this guide in conjunction with the full size rig plans and instructions provided free with our kits. Forward prebend is put in the mast to create forestay tension when the backstay is pulled on, and can be anywhere from 25 mm for softer alloys down to 5 mm for high tensile masts.

Setting up the rig of an International One Meter (IOM) is much the same as any other Class and while some things are basic settings others are peculiar to the IOM Class.
