Hyohō Niten Ichi-ryū (兵法 二天 一流), which can be loosely translated as "the school of the strategy of two heavens as one", is a koryū (ancient school), transmitting a style of classical Japanese swordsmanship conceived by Miyamoto Musashi.

Welcome to the official website of Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu – a traditional bugei ryuha made famous by its founder, the swordsman Shinmen Musashi Fujiwara no Genshin – more commonly known as Miyamoto Musashi.

Differently from other styles, which attribute their style techniques to divine inspiration, Niten Ichi Ryu techniques are the direct result of combat experience by Musashi Sensei. They are the same techniques he used in over 60 duels, all of which he won.

The Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu is the Kenjutsu school created by the famous samurai Miyamoto Musashi (1584 - 1645). Musashi Sensei, as called by the school students, won more than 60 life and death duels, in the search for invencibility.

Hyoho Niten Ichi ryū is unique among kenjutsu styles as it focuses on the one handed use of the sword, be it the long sword (daitō) or short sword (kodachi). Musashi felt that there was limited flexibility and fluidity of movement when both hands are used on a single sword.

There are no chiburi or noto movements in this ryu. This part was explained by Kim Taylor. To bow for the itto set, take 3 steps toward the opponent starting right foot, with the sword at the hip, draw the daito, place the feet on line (shizentai) and go to sonkyo, both persons place their sword on the floor so that the points touch.
