In my view just about a perfect general coverage receiver. It has direct frequency entry, adjustable tuning steps, front panel switchable pre-amp and attentuators and 99 memories, all very nicely laid out. Nice audio tone from a deceptively small speaker. A considerable step-up from my Kenwood R2000. Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.

The Icom R72 receiver system is a triple conversion superheterodyne covering 30 kHz to 30 MHz with 10 Hz LCD display. It employs an advanced DDS - Direct Digital Synthesizer to provide improved carrier-to-noise characteristics and boasts 100 dB dynamic range.

Icom is an outstanding, comprehensive radio manufacturer that produces radio communication equipment of all genres, from amateur radios to terrestrial, marine and avionics radios, as well as LTE, WLAN and satellite radios.

In short, the Icom R-72E is a neat compact communications receiver. It doesn’t have a notch filter or a pass-band tuning control, so it is less of a serious DXer’s receiver than the R-71A. But as an entry level receiver for the serious shortwave listener, this radio scores fairly well.
