Quick Fact about Ifakara Health Institute. Ifakara Health Institute owes its name to the original site in Ifakara Town, Morogoro Region. This remains the registered office of IHI. There is now a co-ordination office in Dar es Salaam, where the Directors’ offices are located. IHI has additional sites in Bagamoyo and Rufiji.

Health Systems, Impact Evaluation and Policy. We conduct multi-disciplinary studies of health systems performance including service delivery, quality, effectiveness and equity. We also monitor and evaluate pilot initiatives, national programs and changes in population health status.

Scientists at the Ifakara branch conduct mainly conduct research on biomedical and to a large scale, environmental and ecological studies, but there are also trials of drugs, vaccines and diagnostics, health-systems research, and monitoring and evaluation.

Life sciences, health systems and public health research: Short courses are offered on regular basis at IHI Training Center in Bagamoyo. The courses target statisticians, research officers, project/program officers, health managers, district/regional medical officers, academicians, health secretaries, under graduate and post graduate students.

The name ‘Ifakara’ refers to ‘a place you go to die,’ a reflection of the historically high burden of malaria disease in the area, before major control efforts started. The beginning: A visit to Ifakara by zoologist Dr. Rudolf Geigy from Switzerland in 1949 marked the beginning of over 50-year history of IHI. Geigy [1920-1995], a scientist from the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel, sought a fieldwork location for researching on tropical diseases.
