Background: Intraplacental choriocarcinoma (IC) is a rare form of malignant gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD). We present a review of 62 cases, including four previously unreported, and a suggested management algorithm.

Intraplacental choriocarcinoma (IC), or choriocarcinoma in situ, is a rare disease on the gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) spectrum, with <100 case reports available in the literature. We propose that many patients with IC are likely to be missed as the majority of patients do not present with metastases.

Intraplacental choriocarcinoma (ICC) is a rare form of gestational trophoblastic disease that has been documented as complicating near-term pregnancies with massive fetomaternal haemorrhage (FMH), intrauterine fetal demise, neonatal anaemia, and disseminated disease of both mother and child.

Introduction: Intraplacental choriocarcinoma is a gestational trophoblastic neoplasia located within the placenta. Due to the usual silent presentation, more than half of the cases are diagnosed incidentally. It has been demonstrated that this pathology is linked to feto-maternal hemorrhage (FMH), stillbirth, and intrauterine growth restriction.

Intraplacental choriocarcinomas can give rise to both maternal and fetal metastases during pregnancy, and it is suggested that such lesions also serve as an origin for those choriocarcinomas which follow a term pregnancy.
