The Ernst H. Bárány Prize was established and the China Chapter of ISER was approved. 2016 The Janet L. Denlinger Award for Distinguished Service to ISER was established and Dr. Christine M. McGahan was the inaugural recipient.

ISER offers four International Prizes (The Endre A. Balazs Prize, The Ernst H. Bárány Prize, The Paul Kayser International Award in Retina Research, The Ludwig von Sallmann Prize) that are presented at the Biennial Meeting of the Society for Eye Research.

ISER began in 1968 by 14 scientists to discuss the merits of establishing an international organization to support eye research. As of 2023, ISER has expanded to include more than 800 members representing 30 countries with the purpose of continuing to supports efforts of advancing international eye research.

This program supports ISER's mission and goal to encourage and support students and young investigators entering the field of eye and vision research worldwide. The program is designed to facilitate exchanges of Trainees, at any training level, between ISER member labs.
