The North Eastern Railway (NER) Class P3, classified J27 by the LNER, is a class of 0-6-0 steam locomotive. The P3 Class was designed by Wilson Worsdell and was a relatively minor modification of the existing North Eastern Railway Class P2 (LNER Class J26).

When it transferred to Sunderland South Dock in 1966 it joined other surviving J27’s working coal trains in East Durham. On 9th September 1967 it worked the last diagrammed steam turn from Sunderland shed. Withdrawal along with the four other survivors swiftly followed and 65894 was sent to Tyne Dock for disposal.

Class J27 no. 65894, running as NER class P3 no. 2392, crosses Eller Beck at Thomason Foss on the climb to Goathland on 23rd September 2023, with the 13.37 goods train from Grosmont to Goathland, during the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Autumn Steam Gala.

Heritage & Preserved Steam Locomotive Engines. 65894 worked freight trains, particularly coal trains in North-East England up to 1967. Class J27 steam locomotive 65894 was built at Darlington Works in 1923 as NER locomotive 2392, later became LNER 5894, finally continued working under British Railways in 1948 as 65894.
